Jamie Rodigan was back live in the studio today with an absolute legend within bass culture, DJ Hype. They spoke about British sound system lineage and their musical identities, as a result of growing up in London.
Words from David Rodigan:
Wotcha Kev (Hackney greeting)
I just wanted to say just how much i enjoyed your interview on WhyNow Radio with my son Jamie.
It was a fascinating to hear you describe your remarkable journey from a “kiddies sound system, playing one deck reggae” in Hackney (Tottenham was country lol) to an iconic figurehead of Jungle music, especially as it is now being ‘re-discovered’ by a whole new generation young people.
In my opinion, what makes radio special (compared to film and television) is it’s ability to take the listener on a journey in the mind, allowing the imagination to recreate the images being described by the person who is talking and you have a very distinctive voice, which enables you to convey the passion and joy that you experienced.
Heartical congratulations and long may you continue to reign as a King and inspiration to amongst us ‘mere mortals’. The irony is that your two hours on radio only touched the tip of the iceberg, in terms of all that you subsequently created as a radio Dee Jay on Kiss FMM and a music maker and riddim creator with your own label, True Playaz.
