Various Artists - The Flavours EP, Vol. 1
1: Shimah - Swordfish
2: Tayza - Firefist
3: Sub Zero & Jaydan - The Weakness
4: Need For Mirrors & Zero T - Vanity
Having already grabbed 2011 by the jugular with releases from Original Sin and Hazard, DJ Hype & Pascal's Playaz imprint isn't ready to start taking prisoners just yet, as they unleash another four-track EP packed with secret weapons.
Those who think they know Playaz' style need to take note as the label has become more diverse and interesting than ever before with every colour in the drum & bass spectrum getting the attention it deserves on 'The Flavours EP' PT.1.
First up Shimah goes deep on 'Swordfish', a track which mixes epic pads and synths with light, percussive beats and low punches of bass that all combine to create an effortless and stunning journey into the deeper side of D&B.
Tayza is next and 'Firefist' touches on a late-'90s dancefloor flavour with stepping beats and wonky bass notes interspersed with car alarm FX that keep things moving all the way through. This is an impressive Playaz debut from DJ Hazard's brother!
Heading into more familiar dancefloor territory, Sub Zero teams up with Jaydan on 'The Weakness', blending punchy beats, incessant synth stabs and a bouncing swagger that's undeniable.
Finally, rounding the EP off with another fresh flavour are Need For Mirrors & Zero T. 'Vanity' is all about crisp drums, sparse slivers of soulful vocal and booming sub bass.
